If you are new to this whole conversation about Deep End, like me, then let me say that it is a monthly worship service in which all people of all ages can come together to share a meal and worship Jesus. When I first learned that Deep End was an inter-denominational worship service, I thought, "Yeah, right! Isn't one of the major divisions of the church community over worship?" But the more that I have investigated, I have understood that Deep End really is a collective worship experience.
I have been leading worship in churches, camps, and other ministry events for over 10 years, but only in the past few years have I really studied what true worship is. We are taught many different things about the Christian life from the pulpit, but seldom are we taught about worship. As one author put it, "Perhaps the greatest need in all of Christendom is for a clear understanding of the biblical teaching about worship. When the church fails to worship properly, it fails in every other area." This next year we will hopefully not only be worshipping in our spirits but also in the truth of God's Word. Before we can know how to worship, we must know Whom we are worshipping.
One of the purposes of Deep End is to bring together the worshipping community of Chanute and surrounding areas, but the second purpose—perhaps the most important one—is to make disciples. Jesus' last words to His followers in Matthew 28:19 was to makes disciples by teaching them everything He has commanded us. This is the ultimate purpose of every Christian, and the same is true for Deep End. If coming together once a month for food, fellowship, and worship does not make disciples, then what is the purpose? Let us come together for the single purpose of making disciples. For me this may be training up future worship leaders, but for you this may mean inviting people.
Starting September 13th Deep End will be resurrected and will continue every 1st Sunday starting in October. Like in the past, bring the whole family to share a meal at 6 PM and worship at 7 PM. I am excited to see how God is going to use Deep End Worship to bring glory to His name. Chanute has a very unique opportunity of coming together despite denominational differences, so let us take advantage of this and seek to build God's kingdom one disciple at a time.
